Android 3.2 is an incremental platform release that adds new capabilities for users and developers. This sections below provide an overview of the new features and developer APIs.
New user features
- Optimizations for a wider range of tabletsAndroid 3.2 includes a variety of optimizations across the system to ensure a great user experience on a wider range of tablet devices.
- Compatibility zoom for fixed-sized appsAndroid 3.2 introduces a new compatibility zoom mode that gives users a new way to view fixed-sized apps on larger devices. The new mode provides a pixel-scaled alternative to the standard UI stretching for apps that are not designed to run on larger screen sizes, such as on tablets. The new mode is accessible to users from a menu icon in the system bar, for apps that need compatibility support.
- Media sync from SD cardOn devices that support an SD card, users can now load media files directly from the SD card to apps that use them. A system facility makes the files accessible to apps from the system media store.

Whether it‘s checking email on the go, connecting with friends through social networks or using turn-by-turn navigation, the capabilities of smartphones are convincing more and more consumers to make the leap from a simple mobile phone to a more sophisticated device. As of Q1 ‘10, Nielsen data shows that 23% of mobile consumers now have a smartphone, up from just 16% in Q2 ‘09.
Vying for their share of the smartphone market are two of the tech industry’s fiercest competitors: Apple, with its iconic iPhone, and Google, with its fast-growing Android operating system.
Between Q4 ’09 and Q1 ’10, Android and iPhone’s share of the smartphone market grew by 2% each. At the same time, smartphone leader Blackberry lost 2% share to fall to 35% of all smartphones while Microsoft’s Windows Mobile OS also lost 2% to fall to 19%.
Although Android and iPhone users both skew male (Android users show a 54/46 gender split compared to iPhone’s 55/45), there are some striking differences. Android users tend to be slightly younger than their iPhone peers- 55% of Android users are under the age of 34 — while just 47% of iPhone users fall within the same demographic. As is usually the case, age is also a prime determinant of income and education, with Android users slightly less wealthy and less educated.
Perhaps what sets iPhone and Android apart from the rest of the field of smartphones is operating system loyalty. 80% of iPhone users want their next device to run iPhone OS while 70% of Android users want another Android device. This is in stark comparison to other major smartphone players: only 47% of Blackberry users want another Blackberry while only 34% of Windows Mobile users want another Windows Mobile device.
Among Android and iPhone users who would like to switch operating systems, the rate at which Android users would like to try iPhone is twice as high as that of iPhone users who would try Android. Given that iPhone penetration is three times that of Android, more iPhone consumers are willing to try Android.
Finally, usage profiles for Android and iPhone are more like each other than the rest of the smartphone market. With a broader selection of titles available to them, predictably iPhone customers are more likely to have downloaded a game or played online, but Android users appear to be using their phones for a wide range of activities as well. Android users were more likely to engage in file-transfer activities like downloading ringtones, pictures, wallpaper and uploads.

Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. Google Inc. purchased the initial developer of the software, Android Inc., in 2005. Android's mobile operating system is based on the Linux kernel. Google and other members of the Open Handset Alliance collaborated on Android's development and release. The Android Open Source Project (AOSP) is tasked with the maintenance and further development of Android. The Android operating system is currently the world's best-selling Smartphone platform.
Android has a large community of developers writing applications ("apps") that extend the functionality of the devices. There are currently over 200,000 apps available for Android. Android Market is the online app store run by Google, though apps can also be downloaded from third-party sites. Developers write primarily in the Java language, controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries.
The unveiling of the Android distribution on 5 November 2007 was announced with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 80 hardware, software, and telecom companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices. Google released most of the Android code under the Apache License, a free software and open source license.
The Android open-source software stack consists of Java applications running on a Java-based, object-oriented application framework on top of Java core libraries running on a Dalvik virtual machine featuring JIT compilation. Libraries written in C include the surface manager, OpenCore[21] media framework, SQLite relational database management system, OpenGL ES 2.0 3D graphics API, WebKit layout engine, SGL graphics engine, SSL, and Bionic libc. The Android operating system, including the Linux kernel, consists of roughly 12 million lines of code including 3 million lines of XML, 2.8 million lines of C, 2.1 million lines of Java, and 1.75 million lines of C++.

T-Mobile’s G2x, known outside the United States as the Optimus 2X, is a dual-core beast of a phone that should definitely be on the radar of those looking for a new Android device.
It has a fantastic 4-inch LCD display, HSPA+ 4G speeds and it has the ability to capture 1080p which is something most top of the line smartphones aren’t able to do.
The G2x is $200 on a new two-year contract from T-Mobile but you can get it from Amazon for a mere $99. Not bad for a phone with these fantastic specifications.

HTC Droid Incredible 2
We recently previewed the HTC Droid Incredible 2, the successor of the wildly popular Droid Incredible, and came away very impressed. The increase in display size from 3.7 to 4-inches works well and doesn’t add any additional bulk.
Its single-core 1GHz processor is quick and it comes with almost an identical form factor to the original Droid Incredible. Add in all the other bells and whistles and you have yourself a fantastic 3G phone.
The Droid Incredible 2 was released only a few weeks ago and it’s available for a mere $80 on a new contract.

HTC ThunderBolt
The HTC ThunderBolt is Verizon’s first 4G LTE smartphone and as of right now, it’s also the only 4G LTE smartphone on the market with the delay of the Samsung Droid Charge.
And while we think the Droid Charge gives the ThunderBolt a run for its money (see: battery life), it’s not out yet which means the HTC ThunderBolt easily makes this list.
The ThunderBolt is essentially an HTC EVO with 4G LTE speeds, which as you’ll see in a second, isn’t a bad thing whatsoever. The hardware is solid, the software as well and with an upgrade to Gingerbread coming in the not-so-distant future, the ThunderBolt is worthy of this list.
It’s currently available for $175 on a new two-year contract.

HTC EVO 4G
Sprint’s HTC EVO 4G has been out for nearly a year and it still is arguably the best phone on the WiMax network. It has 4G speeds, a great screen, fantastic cameras, a solid battery, and Froyo.
Word to the wise though. The successor to the HTC EVO 4G, the HTC EVO 3D, is on its way which will quickly push this device out of the rankings. However, the original EVO will be getting Gingerbread in the future and its specifications are still solid a year later.
Old faithful can be yours for $120 on a new two year contract if you so wish. (Note: There’s a reason it’s still that expensive.)

Most will be aware that Android Market is de facto standard for downloading apps for your Android Phone. You can access the Android Market via your browser or Android Market App. The site gives you quick access to Featured, Top Free and Top Paid apps. It’s a pity they don’t tell you which Android platforms you need.
Other useful info Android Apps: AppAware : shares online your installations, updates and removals of Android applications. In this way you become aware (App-Aware) of what other users are installing on their mobile phones right now and/or around you! AndroidPit with its daily featured App and extensive review is a very useful app.
Where do you go for the latest Android Information? Online Android AllTop collates huge resource of Android information under a range of headings from Most Popular Stories, Goggle Mobile Blog to Android Social Media.
