How to Choose A Good Monitor

Are you looking for a computer monitor? Monitors are your window into the computer - everything that happens in your software and applications happens via the monitor.

It is hence very important tochoose a good monitor to go along with your new PC.
Traditionally, CRT (cathode ray tube) monitors have been used for desktop computers. However, these days, LCD (liquid crystal display) monitors are selling like hotcakes.
It's easy to see why: LCD monitors are easier on the eyes, have very crisp image quality and yes, they're sexy and cool. Laptops also use LCD screens - so we're slowly beginning to see CRT monitors being phased out.

Which type you choose depends on your requirements. If you're a graphics professional, you may prefer a CRT monitor because they are said to show more realistic colors.

However, the latest high-end LCDs can also give equal color quality. If you with text most of the time, a LCD is a good choice because the various pixels that you find on a LCD will have nicely defined edges. This gives sharp and focus letters on the screen.

To help you choose a monitor that'll meet your needs, this article will step through the factors to consider when buying a LCD or CRT monitor.

LCD Monitors
Let's first look at the various factors you need to think about when purchasing a LCD displayicon.

Panel Size
In an LCD monitor, the panel size reflects the viewable area you can use. Again, the measurement is made diagonally from one corner of the screen to the opposite corner. LCD panel sizes now range from 15 inches up to 23 inches.

Native ResolutionAn LCD panel display always has a certain native resolution. Usually you can go lower than this resolution but the image will appear blurry. If you need to change your monitor resolution quite often, then a CRT monitor may be a better bet. LCD native resolutions currently range from 1024 by 768 to 1600 by 1200.
Viewing AngleOne problem specific to LCD monitors is the fact that you cannot see what is displayed if you move off to the side of the monitor too much. A greater viewing angle is therefore typically better - especially if you need to show presentations to others on the LCD screen very often.

CRT Monitors
Now let's take a look at some things you need to look out for when purchasing a CRT displayicon.
Tube Size and Viewable AreaThe tube size and viewable area of a CRT monitor is of utmost importance. The tube size helps you judge how much room you'll need for the monitor on your desk. It is expressed in inches measured from one corner of the monitor to the opposite corner.
The viewable area (also measured diagonally) indicates how much you'll be able to see on a screen. The viewable area of CRTs can range from 15 inches all the way up to 22 inches.

Tube TypeYou'll need to think about tube type as well. Traditional CRTs have curved screens, while newer models usually have flat screens. Flat screens improve clarity and reduce glare, so you should think of getting one if you want to reduce eye strain and fatigue.

Maximum Resolution and Refresh RateA CRT monitor's maximum resolution can range from 1024 by 768 at 75 Hz all the way up to 2048 by 1536 at 70 Hz. For normal home use, 1024 by 768 at 75 Hz is sufficient. Try to ensure your CRT monitor supports refresh rates above 70 Hz - anything below 70 Hz can result in screen flicker and cause eye strain.

Dot PitchThe dot pitch of a CRT monitor helps you determine how sharp a picture will be - these can range from 0.24 mm to 0.28 mm. A smaller dot pitch number often indicates a sharper image. Of course, to the untrained eye, the differences in image quality due to dot pitch may not be discernable. Hence, the dot pitch may not be an important consideration if you're not too concerned about the finest details in your screen images.

Facebook launches question-and-answer feature

Getprev
For answers to everyday questions such as "What party should I go to?" and more existential dilemmas like "Am I a jerk?," millions of people turn to Facebook and query their friends.

Now the social media giant has launched Facebook Questions -- a question-and-answer feature akin to Yahoo! Answers that can pose your questions to the entire Facebook community.
The new feature, which has been in beta-testing since July and is now rolling out to all users (to activate click here), shows up at the top of your News Feed and Profile pages as a share option along with status updates, photos, links and videos.
You can also add a photo or set up a poll with a limited number of answers for more targeted querying. If you want to ask, "What should I do this weekend?," for example, just type in the question, then click "Add Poll Options" and fill it in with specific answers such as the beach, a movie, pub crawl, sky diving, sleep, etc.
If another question piques your interest, you can "Follow" it and receive a notification anytime a new answer is submitted.
Perhaps the most important factor to consider, though, before going forth and seeking wisdom is that Facebook Questions has no privacy settings. All questions and answers are "public and visible to everyone on the Internet," Facebook said.
If you just want to get your friends' opinions, Facebook suggests you pose your question as a status update.

Google delays delivering Android Honeycomb for open source

Google delays delivering Android Honeycomb for open source

Those waiting for Android Honeycomb will have to wait some more. Google announced that it will delay distribution of its newest Android source code, nicknamed Honeycomb, for the foreseeable future.
HoneycombStatue
Designed to run on tablet computers, the Honeycomb operating system is already powering Motorola's Xoom tablet and is expected to appear in other devices. But Google said Honeycomb isn't quite ready for public release as open source software for people to tweak and customize for their own gadgets.
"Android 3.0, Honeycomb, was designed from the ground up for devices with larger screen sizes and improves on Android favorites such as widgets, multi-tasking, browsing, notifications and customization," Google said in a statement.
"While we're excited to offer these new features to Android tablets, we have more work to do before we can deliver them to other device types including phones. Until then, we've decided not to release Honeycomb to open source. We're committed to providing Android as an open platform across many device types and will publish the source as soon as it's ready."
Some critics point to this delay as a sign that Google, which has billed itself as a proponent of open source software against competitors like Research in Motion and Apple, is reluctant to continue in the same vein. Others say that the Honeycomb may simply not be ready to be put into smartphones and other non-tablet devices.

Apple iPod touch

Apple's iPod touch, originally launched on September 5, 2007, is a flash memory-based portable media player capable of playing music, photos, and video.
The newest model includes built in speakers and integrated Nike+iPod technology for runners. The iPod touch is also a WiFi-enabled computing platform with various PDA-like programs included, such as the Safari web browser, a basic e-mail client, an address book, a calendar, a calculator, a clock, a weather application, iTunes, and a Google Maps-powered map application.
Additional programs — including over 20,000 video games — can be purchased directly from the iPod touch using the included App Store application or synced to the device after purchace via the App Store in the desktop version of iTunes. Additionally, the iPod Touch supports Apple's Genius playlist feature, which suggests playlists based on similarities between the different songs on the iPod.
On September 9th, 2009, Apple announced that the iPod touch would receive an OpenGLgraphics upgrade for improved 3D gaming performance. It also dropped prices and increased storage. The iPod touch is now available in 8 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB models, priced at $199, $299, and $399 respectively.

Apple's iOS 4.3.1 update released, fixes iPod Touch glitches

Apple has just released the iOS 4.3.1 software update — a cure for various iOS bugs and the graphical glitches which have been plaguing iPod Touch users for a while.
Apparently there were some peculiar graphical weirdiosities which occasionally drove owners of fourth generation iPod Touch devices insane. No more of that though, because this update will supposedly put an end to the flickering and pixilating.
Other things included in the iOS update are fixes for the issues some devices were experiencing when activating and connecting to cellular networks, a resolution for authentication issues experienced by some enterprise Web services, and some bug fixes for owners of Apple's Digital AV Adapters.
If you're ready to install iOS 4.3.1 on your iOS device (iPod Touch, iPad, or AT&T iPhone — this update is not for the Verizon iPhone), then connect the gadget to iTunes and hit the "check for updates" button.

iPad 2 Jailbreak & iOS 4.3.1 Update

A few weeks ago, Comex- a developer of popular jailbreaking tools like JailbreakMe and Spirit had reported that he had found a way to successfully jailbreak iOS 4.3 on the iPad 2. On asking the developer about how he went about jailbreaking iOS 4.3 on the iPad 2, it has been found that he used a userland exploit. This means that this kind of a jailbreak can be applied directly from the iPad 2 very similar to JailbreakMe.
20110325 jailbreak1 iPad 2 Jailbreak & iOS 4.3.1 Update

While all this may sound like really good news the problem now is that as you may have heard, there are reports that Apple is going to release an update to iOS 4.3. Since userland vulnerabilities can be patched using software updates the probability of iOS 4.3.1 fixing this vulnerability is very high. Comex has to release his jailbreaking method before iOS 4.3.1 is released but this seems unlikely.
The only good news that Comex has mentioned a bootrom exploit which has been discovered by i0n1c jailbreak a few weeks back. Because a bootrom exploit can only be patched using a hardware upgrade the probability of this being the jailbreak tool for iOS 4.3 seems to be higher. However, the jailbreak community may want to save this exploit for later (specifically after the iPhone 5 release).
After Comex reported that he had successfully jailbroken the iPad 2 no other news about this has come out. iOS 4.3 is still to be jailbroken however, you have a tethered method using Snowbreeze 2.3 and iBooty which has been updated to its fourth beta version recently. Unfortunately this is only for Windows users and still has a few bugs which need to be sorted out.
It is also not confirmed by Comex whether the method he had found was compatible for all iOS devices running iOS 4.3 or only the iPad 2.
The world still awaits a jailbreak for the iPad 2 and iOS 4.3 while Apple is regularly trying to stop the same. Let’s hope we hear some good news fast.
